APPLICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY

Can a side business qualify for a Southwest business card?

Freelance work or a side business may qualify. Here’s what Chase asks for and how existing Southwest cards affect the application.

Quick answer

You don’t necessarily need an LLC or employees to apply for a business card. Chase says sole proprietors and freelancers with a real profit-making activity may be eligible. Use your actual business details, and check the restrictions for the specific card you want.

Does your side work count as a business?

Freelance design, tutoring, dog walking, delivery work and selling goods for profit are examples of activities that may qualify. You don’t necessarily need employees, an office or an LLC.

Selling a few things you no longer want doesn’t automatically make you eligible. Describe the work you actually do and answer Chase’s questions about it accurately.

Prepare the application details

A sole proprietor without a separate business name may use their own name. Chase’s general guidance says an SSN may be used where an EIN isn’t required. Provide the requested business structure, industry, time in business, revenue and personal financial details.

Enter your existing Rapid Rewards number for the person who will earn the rewards. A mismatched or newly created loyalty account can complicate your qualification plan. Check the number again after approval.

If your credit file is frozen, use the credit bureau’s official process to arrange any required temporary lift for the application. Don’t assume a frozen report means you’re ineligible.

Existing cards and previous welcome bonuses

The Plus terms reviewed for this guide exclude current holders of a Southwest personal card and people who received a Southwest personal-card welcome bonus within the previous 24 months; business and employee products are excluded from that personal-family restriction.

The Performance Business offer’s restriction is specific to that business product: current holders and previous holders who received its welcome bonus within the last 24 months are excluded. Check the exact product’s language instead of extending this wording to every Chase card.

The clock concerns when you received the bonus, not simply when you opened or closed the card. An upgrade isn’t automatically a new-account welcome bonus.

Do you have to cancel an existing card first?

It depends on which card you hold and which offer you want. Holding an unrelated eligible business card doesn’t mean you must close every Southwest account before seeking a personal card. Holding a personal Southwest card can affect eligibility for a new personal offer; holding the same business product can affect that business offer.

Closing a card doesn’t erase a recent welcome bonus or guarantee approval. Confirm the applicable restriction and any required account-status update before acting. “Cancel all cards and wait 30 days” isn’t a rule you can rely on.

If Chase needs more information

Read the application notice and use the contact details on it or on Chase’s official website. Have your business information and any requested documents ready.

If you ask Chase to reconsider a denial, explain why you want the card and correct any errors in the application. For example, you may want to separate your business expenses. Use your own reasons; repeated calls or a rehearsed script won’t guarantee approval.
